A girl of about 10 or 11 came into the sandwich shop. Holding her Daddy’s hand. It’s a little old for that type of behavior, which made it more endearing. While waiting, I noticed her t shirt. Sees Forget Princess I Want To Be An Astrophysicist Shirt. Wonders, why not both? Why does being logical and scientific entail a rejection of femininity? I don’t think the T-shirt maker put that much thought into it, but subtext matters. For better or for worse, everything we see is added to that conversation, and this is another small thing that tells us that these two completely unrelated things are at odds with each other, that we have to choose. I’m sure Cinderella is a nice enough lady, and the girls thought meeting her was neat; but the highlight of this day for me was seeing Harper throw some next level shade by making sure Miss Teen Forced Smile saw her Forget Princess I Want To Be An Astrophysicist Shirt. I want them to grow up to do/be what they are passionate about and that can be being a princess and having a career- whether that career is a teacher, a scientist, a paleontologist and/or a mom.
