‘Shameless,’ ‘This Is Us’ and ‘The Punisher’ all return in another busy week at the beginning of 2019.
The onslaught of premieres in the new year continues in the week of Jan. 14. After a big week of broadcast debuts the previous week, cable channels and streaming services combine for more than a dozen series and season premieres.
Below is The Hollywood Reporter’s rundown of some of the coming week’s highlights. It would be next to impossible to watch everything, but THR can point the way to some worthy options. All times are ET/PT unless noted.
On broadcast …
New: Based on Justin Cronin’s best-selling novels, The Passage (9 p.m. Monday, Fox) follows a government agent (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) who’s supposed to bring a young girl (Saniyya Sidney) to a secret government testing facility where experiments could find a cure for all diseases, or wipe out the human race. Instead, though, he becomes a surrogate father figure and tries to protect her no matter what.

Also new: Roswell, New Mexico (9 p.m. Tuesday, The CW) is a more grown-up take on the Roswell High books that previously birthed the turn-of-the-century WB/UPN show. Jeanine Mason (Grey’s Anatomy) and Nathan Parsons (The Originals) head the cast.
Returning: A host of shows return from hiatus, among them The Good Doctor (10 p.m. Monday, ABC), The Flash (8 p.m. Tuesday, The CW), This Is Us (9 p.m. Tuesday, NBC), Riverdale (8 p.m. Wednesday, The CW), All American (9 p.m. Wednesday, The CW), Grey’s Anatomy (8 p.m. Thursday, ABC), Supernatural (8 p.m. Thursday, The CW), A Million Little Things (9 p.m. Thursday, ABC), How to Get Away with Murder (10 p.m. Thursday, ABC), Saturday Night Live (11:30 p.m. ET/8:30 PT Saturday, NBC), Supergirl (8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, The CW) and Charmed (9 p.m. Sunday, The CW).
On cable …
New: Syfy’s Deadly Class (10 p.m. Wednesday) is an adaptation of the comic book series about a homeless teenager (Benjamin Wadsworth) recruited into a private school where the world’s crime families send their progeny to learn the trade. Marcus tries to keep his moral compass intact while figuring out where (or if) he fits in with his new classmates.
Also new: Don Cheadle returns to Showtime in Black Monday (10 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, Showtime), a dark comedy set in New York circa the 1987 stock market crash. USA brings back Temptation Island (10 p.m. Tuesday) as the 2000s nostalgia wave intensifies.
Returning: Drunk History and Corporate (10 and 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Comedy Central); Schitt’s Creek (10 p.m. Wednesday, Pop); Shameless (9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, Showtime); Crashing and High Maintenance (10 and 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, HBO); SMILF (10:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, Showtime).
On streaming …
New: Beloved 1990s kids’ series Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? gets a 21st century update with Netflix’s Carmen Sandiego (Friday), which focuses on the mysterious woman in red’s origins. Gina Rodriguez voices the main character.
Also new: British family drama Butterfly (Friday, Hulu); a boy’s quest for his dad’s stolen Trans Am in Wayne (Wednesday, YouTube); an adaptation of the best-selling fantasy novel A Discovery of Witches (Thursday, Sundance Now).
Returning: New seasons ofStar Trek: Discovery (Thursday, CBS All Access), Grace and Frankie (Friday, Netflix) and The Punisher (Friday, Netflix).
In case you missed it …
British import Informer follows a young Pakistani British man (Nabhaan Rizwan) who is pulled into a counterterrorism investigation. THR’s review says the series “immediately sets the hook with three standout performances before slowly proving that its ensemble has other surprises up its sleeve.” It’s streaming on Amazon.
