With menswear, there are only so many ways a designer can make the classics feel new again. Trousers might be high-waisted one season, then super skinny-fit the next. But in regards to suiting, the look of the summer isn’t about the silhouette itself, but what one wears underneath it. Allow actor Shia LaBeouf to show just how the fresh styling should be executed.
Yesterdays, the star hit the red carpet at the premiere of The Peanut Butter Falcon in Hollywood wearing suiting’s best new pairing: a skin-tight tee. He wore a blue wool suit from Givenchy’s Spring 2020 collection, styling it with a form-fitting turquoise T-shirt underneath, also by the French label. This subversive approach to suiting up was seen on the recent Spring runways: Celine showed a tight muscle tank with a striped blazer, while Versace went the extra mile with a mesh tee worn underneath a sequin style.
Suddenly, a traditional button-up seems stuffy and snoozy—a pec-enhancing top makes the business attire feel youthful and fresh. Who would have thought LaBeouf would be summer’s breakout trendsetter?
