A friend of mine has shared the following about someone dear to her who took her own life. Down syndrome does come with a manual a mom who never gives up shirt! The first section is written by my friend Cat. The second section is the words of Cat’s friend Cass, whose suffering drove her to end her life. It was important to Cass that her message reach as many people as possible. Someone I love very much has taken her life due to the severity of her illness.

Cass wrote a beautiful letter which she asked to be shared (posted below) to explain about her struggle, raise awareness about a very real medical condition, and request that we all look a little deeper inside ourselves and the humane end of a loved one’s life. Down syndrome does come with a manual a mom who never gives up shirt! Her words are eloquent and powerful. I will keep them with me to contribute to the world as an advocate for humane end of life and the dangers of benzos.

Reading her words, I realize that my mother likely suffered similar brain trauma from over a decade of being on benzos and I can’t help but wonder if this contributed to her early death from organ failure at 55 years old. Down syndrome does come with a manual a mom who never gives up shirt! I hope her words find more people who are also suffering through such illness, so that they can know they are not alone.
