Every girl group goes through a matching outfits phase. The Supremes, Destiny’s Child, and even the individualistic Spice Girls all had their moments of epic coordination, so it makes sense that Blackpink would carry the trend into the 21st century. Over the weekend, the K-Pop supergroup offered their take on the concept via a deep dive into Marine Serre’s moon print. The French designer has covered tops, dresses, and accessories in the crescents that have become her signature. When the band got together for a few social media snapshots after an appearance on the South Korean music show, Inkigayo, they had their pick of Serre pieces. Serre’s knits make a cameo in the fashion-filled video for their single ‘How You Like That,’ and it’s clear that she’s earned their seal of approval.
Though they stuck to their black and pink color palettes, each member found an item that fits their personality. A cropped version of the Moon Shadow top worn beneath a bralette was the right look for extrovert Lisa, while Jennie preferred ruffles fresh from the fall/winter 2020 runway. Rosé made overalls seem cool by layering a tube top beneath Serre’s fisherman-inspired jumpsuit. Jisoo channeled the spirit of ‘80s bad girls in shiny leather hot pants accented by chains and frayed denim vest. The overarching vibe was as rebellious and futuristic as one of Serre’s shows.
While Serre was the starting point for the Inkigayo moment, her pieces received a custom makeover to make them fan friendly. The fact that her work can withstand being cropped and chopped into something new without losing any of its impact speaks to the strength of Serre’s designs and the brand’s commitment to upcycling. When a label already remixes the past into something new, its fans feel free to do the same, onstage and off.
