17-year-old pop sensation Billie Eilish was born on December 18, 2001, which puts her squarely in Gen Z territory. This is obvious enough from looking at Eilish’s obsessions—like any young girl born at the turn of the century, she loves Justin Bieber. When he collaborated with her on a remix of “Bad Guy” last month, she uploaded the song to YouTube with an old photo that depicts her in her adolescent bedroom, dressed in a hot pink sequined outfit and a bow in her hair, as posters of “Boyfriend”-era Bieber surround every inch of the wall around her.
With her latest outfit, though, Eilish belies her age. She looks more like a true ’90s kid, dressed in a white denim jacket boldly printed with characters from Japanese manga JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (it was originally serialized between 1987 and 2004, and there were two animated videos that came out in 1993 and 1994) and jean shorts that New York based-artist Slumpy Kev hand painted with Cartoon Network favorite Courage the Cowardly Dog, which ran from 1996 to 2002. And last but not least, Eilish continues her relationship of mutual respect with the Spice Girls—when Melanie C met the young singer earlier this year, she gave Eilish her stamp of approval—by revealing a Sporty Spice T-shirt underneath it all. Eilish already seemed wise beyond her years, but the pop cultural matrix of this latest Instagram ’fit cinches it.
