The early 2000s were all about the going-out top. Those midriff-baring pieces were often worn with low-slung jeans for a night out, in the vein of one Paris Hilton (that’s hot). But what was once old is new again: the fancy top is now making a comeback, and leave it to trendsetter Bella Hadid to revive the look with a more current spin.
Spotted on vacation in Mykonos, Greece last night with a friend, the model stepped out in a shiny orange deep-V halter top with ruching at the front. In the early-aughts fashion, she wore them with a pair of jeans, hers a wide-legged pair with a distressed front seam. It made for a throwback combo that still felt very modern, thanks to the top’s clean lines and lack of embellishment. When it came time for accessories, she then further leaned into signatures of that decade. A mini Louis Vuitton shoulder bag—with a butterfly hair clip secured onto the strap!—and clear plastic sandals both referenced the past, but have been recently spotted on fellow models such as Kendall Jenner.
So, the next time you’re hitting the town? Put down the slinky party dress and consider the two-piece instead. You have the jeans already—just fancify the top and head on out the door.
