Swae Lee Reinterprets Homecoming Game Style with a Surprise Howard University Appearance

Swae Lee is undeniably a trendsetter. He was one of the first rappers to step out in a pair of cowboy boots, thereby christening the Westernwear trend that’s now reached mass saturation thanks to Lil Nas X. But his latest obsession is a far cry from a ten gallon hat. Now he’s bringing back the beloved scrunchie, the favorite accessory of every ’90s schoolgirl.

If you’ve been a hawk-eyed follower of Lee’s Instagram over the past few weeks, you might have picked up on this scrunchie revival—earlier this month he tied his hair back loosely in a velvety turquoise scrunchie. This past weekend, though, he showed off yet another hair tie (this one purple) at his surprise appearance at Howard University’s homecoming game. Lee briefly joined the marching band in the stands, where he mimed playing the clarinet and the trumpet and momentarily topped off his look with Howard University’s military-inspired cap. And in classic fashion, Lee left his daintily embroidered collared shirt completely unbuttoned. Leave it to Lee to put his own spin on the tried-and-true marching band uniform.
