Screen printed t-shirts really start to make their presence felt in the 1950s. Flat Mars Society Shirt This is very significant when it comes to screen printed t-shirts and the origins of the custom tee. The garment that started out as a simple undershirt to be worn under military uniforms takes a more prominent role in the years following World War II. Civilians start wearing them as standalone tops and it’s not long before the idea of custom printed t-shirts emerges. Screen printing had taken root in the United States during the 1930s and by the Fifties, companies in Miami are printing promotional t-shirts with the names of resorts and local attractions. Screen printing takes a huge leap in the Sixties when it becomes synonymous with the Pop Art movement. Works by artists such as Andy Warhol not only publicise screen printing, they open it to a mass market.

There is a logo on the front of the t-shirt but the main design is on the back, so I will focus on that Flat Mars Society Shirt. The white and red colors look good on the back and the composition of the design works. The content of the design, however, has no meaning for me and therefore doesn’t interest me. It might spark a conversation but if I were wearing it and someone asked me about it I would just say that I don’t know what it’s about.
OK, I’ll be direct here. I don’t understand the design. I have a feeling it’s just garbage with no real meaning (feel free to enlighten me). I live in Japan where they love to put English text on t-shirts. The meaning is not important but rather how the words look or even in some cases what the individual words mean. If I had seen someone wearing this in my neighborhood, I would have just thought to myself “there we go again with the nonsensical English t-shirts”.

These shirts are nice. They are lighter than the hanes heavy cotton shirts. They feel good and fit as expected. They are really comfortable and cooler than most of my shirts.
